The Challenge & Project Scope
The moorings had not undergone out-of-water inspections for three years. In tidal rivers like the Medway, abrasive silt combined with constant tidal swinging accelerates wear on the underwater links. Ground tackle links, swivels, and shackles were suspected to have worn below the 15% tolerance limit required by insurers.
The MMS Solution & Deployed Assets
We deployed our multi-role workboat tug 'Felaura' equipped with a heavy deck winch and an A-frame. Our crew raised the entire mooring configuration, including the concrete ground sinkers and riser chains. Using physical calipers, we measured link thickness at every high-wear point. Worn swivels and shackles were cut away and replaced with certified components. We fitted new sacrificial anodes to prevent galvanic corrosion on the metal blocks. Felaura and supporting craft worked together to hold the site secure throughout the mooring lift.
Project Outcome & Verification
All chains were successfully inspected and calibrated, and we replaced 45 metres of worn riser chain. The trot moorings were returned to service, fully certified for insurance validation with zero operational delays.
